We are planning a move to Panama when I retire (1 to 2 years) so am doing some research. I am a Veteran and will also be collecting Social Security.
Is there a political relationship between Panama and the U.S. Government or an established Expat?
Can I have all SS and retirement funds electronically sent to a bank in Panama so I do not have to worry or do that portion manually?
I have been driving since I turned 16, do I have to pass a written and driving test once established in Panama?
I want to retain my U.S. citizenship but reside in Panama, will this be a conflict with my U.S. citizenship?

Hi Steve,
There is no political or SSA relationship between Panama and the US government.
In my opinion, the best way to handle the SSA check question is to continue to have it direct deposited into your USA bank account. Then use your bank card to take money out and/or wire a lump sum occasionally to your Panama bank. (You will be happy you kept a USA bank account for many reasons.) There are also other ways to get your SSA check, including having your check mailed to you using a mail service or other means.
Yes, you have to take a test – written and driving – to get a driver’s license in Panama. It is a process to get your driver’s license, esp. for the first time. The US embassy has some info on it here: http://panama.usembassy.gov/obtaining_a_panama_drivers_license.html
You can be a US citizen while still being a legal permanent resident in Panama.
I think that covers it. Enjoy

How can someone earn money living in Panama? I can teach English but not sure how to go about it

Hi Carol,
I have written some posts on earning money in Panama.
You might want to start with this one.

I think the easiest way is to teach English on-line.
If you go to this link, there is a video of an expat telling
how he started teaching English online.
